It was initially a plan with a gang of guys to go to Tenom, organize a BBQ session at one of the homestay there for a night but called off as no one was able to make it on that day, except me, with the plan.
So without the plan, i’d decided to visit Tenom town with my wife instead on the first day of “Hari Kaamatan” which fell on 30th May 2014. Briefly, if you are not familiar with “Hari Kaamatan”, it’s actually festival celebrating the harvesting of paddy by the indigenous people of Borneo and it’s public holidays on 30th and 31st May in Sarawak and 1st and 2nd in Sabah.
Due to unforeseen heavy rain in the morning, we were only able to start driving about 10a.m. in the morning. I was excited because it was the first time, since I moved to Sabah to ever visit Tenom town. There are two routes, the first route is through Kimanis. This route was built quite recently and it takes lesser time to reach, but the downside of this route is it’s very steep, up to 20 degree and vehicle with low power may have very hard time travelling this route. Another route is through Penampang. This route takes longer time to reach and it’s very winding, however, the route is not steep and along the way, there are many tourist attractions and one of them being the Rafflesia Reasearch Centre and yes, you will be able to witness this plant, the largest flower in the world here in Sabah but the flower only bloom on certain time.
We took the first route on the way to Tenom as I planned a day trip so I wanted to reach Tenom town as soon as possible but the route was really pain in the ass for my little car. We managed to reach Tenom town around 1p.m. but before we reach Tenom, we dropped by at the Sabah Murut Cultural Centre for a visit.
My thought about the town? I love it. The Tenom town is located just at the foot of the Crocker Range. The town itself, though small, it’s peace and quiet. Pictures below speaks thousand words.
Map regarding the route I have taken during this trip.
